Why Crate Train?

A crate provides your puppy with a safe, den-like space of their own. When introduced properly, most puppies learn to love their crate. It aids potty training, prevents destructive chewing, and gives your puppy a place to decompress.

Choosing the Right Crate

Select a crate that is large enough for your puppy to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. If you have a large breed, buy an adult-sized crate with a divider — too much space can hinder potty training.

Step 1: Introduction

Place the crate in a common area with the door open. Toss treats inside and let your puppy explore freely. Never push or force them in. Repeat several times throughout the first day.

Step 2: Meals in the Crate

Start feeding meals inside the crate with the door open. Once your puppy eats comfortably, begin closing the door during meals and opening it as soon as they finish.

Step 3: Gradual Duration

After your puppy is comfortable eating in the crate, begin adding short intervals with the door closed while you stay nearby. Start with 1-2 minutes and gradually increase to 10-15 minutes over several days.

Step 4: Leaving the Room

Once your puppy is calm for 15+ minutes with the door closed, try stepping out of the room briefly. Return before any whining starts. Slowly increase the time you are out of sight.

Step 5: Nighttime Crating

Place the crate near your bed at first so your puppy feels secure. Young puppies will need nighttime potty breaks every 3-4 hours. Gradually move the crate to its permanent location as your puppy adjusts.

What to Never Do

Never use the crate as punishment. Never leave a young puppy crated for more than 3-4 hours (except overnight with potty breaks). Do not open the crate when your puppy is whining — wait for a moment of quiet, then reward.
